History of Fayetteville

History of Fayetteville

history arkansas

The year 1829 saw the completion of the Washington Court House, which also contains the post office. Later in the year, Postmaster Larkin Newton realized that many people would confuse it with Washington, Hempstead County. For this reason, he changed the name to Fayetteville Courthouse. Two councilmen chose Fayetteville's name for the city, derived from Fayetteville, Tennessee, and Fayetteville, North Carolina. The original Fayetteville was named after General Lafayette. He was a French general that contributed a lot to the American Revolutionary War. Initially, Fayetteville was habited by Native Americans and was later occupied by the Cherokee, who were the first permanent settlers. Around 1828, George McGarrah and his sons John, William, and James settled in the area close to Big Spring. They founded Washington and, on October 17th, established Washington County. The year 1829 saw the completion of the Washington Court House though it was later named the Fayetteville Courthouse. In 1830, John Nye opened the first store, and soon after, the Sevier Brothers opened another. In 1833 William McGarrah opened a grocery store, and Alfred Wallace opened another general store, which led to the town's growth. In 1835, President Andrew Jackson gave out a patent for 160 acres that formed the Fayetteville original settlement. It wasn't until 1836 when the first State legislature Incorporated the Town of Fayetteville.
