Named after the rough military history of its founding years, Fort Casper is the land of immigrants and daring hopefuls. The military history of the fort dates back to the 1840s. Voyagers and land seekers pitched their ferries at the fort, initially called Platte Bridge Station. However, they would encounter charged resistance from American Indians. This subsequently created the necessity for a military garrison at the Gurnard Bridge. The military was tasked with telegraph and mail service maintenance. In some way, gatekeepers from the ferocity of the American Indians, especially after the Sand Creek Massacre of 1864. This heightened tension led to the death of the man in whose honor the fort is named after. On a sunny July afternoon, a charged Indian warrior attacked and killed Lieutenant Caspar Collins. With his father, Colonel Collins calling shots, he named the fort in his son’s memory. In 1867, the military had subdued the locals, and the fort was closed, giving rise to a railway town. Albeit moving a little bit to the east of where the original fort was established, the town prospered from Wyoming Central Railway’s plans for expansion. In committing a typo, the town was registered as Casper. With the boom of railroads, the town found its life. Pioneer Town Site Company took charge of the planning. With the discovery of oil at the Salt Creek Oil Field, Casper would blossom to be the second-largest city in Wyoming State. Another notable oil field in Casper is the Teapot Dome which would be the Achilles heel of President Warren G. Harding’s administration.
