History of Casper

History of Casper

Fort Caspar, Wyoming

The town was named after adjacent Fort Casper, which was then in ruins, when the Fremont, Elkhorn & Missouri Valley Railroad arrived in June 1888. The fort was named after Lt. Caspar Collins, who was slain by Indians near the fort in 1865. In 1881, Casper was selected as a county seat and the town of Casper was incorporated in 1885. Today, Casper is a town of around 80.3K people and is the center of Wyoming’s largest county. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it became a major cattle-raising center for the American West. This boom in the cattle business resulted in the creation of the famous dude ranching industry. The biggest factor that facilitated the local businesses was the development of railroad infrastructure. And soon after the development of railroads, the town became a major cattle and wool shipping hub. The city's first structures were located around the junction which we now call A and McKinley streets. People from nearby towns started to relocate to Casper, Wyoming due to the extensive railroad network. The relocation process was initiated with the hope of major development in the city. Casper is also known as "Oil City." When oil was discovered here by Standard Oil Company it catalyzed a boom that changed the city forever. The discovery of oil led to the creation of what is now the second largest city in Wyoming.
