The increase occurred despite the challenges of the national depression and a severe plague of grasshoppers. The 20th century was a successful decade for Sioux Falls because of developments throughout the 1900s. The opening of the John Morrell Meat Packing Plant in 1909 and the founding of an airbase and military radio and communications training school in 1942 influenced the city’s growth. More developments such as interstate highways influenced the city’s population and economic growth. Today, Sioux Falls is the most populous city, yet one of the best in South Dakota.
