History of Aberdeen

History of Aberdeen

south dakota history

The Sioux Indians inhabited the area that is now known as Aberdeen and Brown County before European settlers began settling in the area in the 1800s. The European settlers set up fur trading posts, which operated until the mid-1830s. Aberdeen town was established on July 6, 1881, and incorporated in 1883. The town was built around the developing railroad systems. The residents built buildings along Aberdeen’s Main Street and established many businesses. However, for a long time, the town had flooding issues and was at some point referred to as “The Town in the Frog Pond.” In 1882, Aberdeen built an artesian well to try and control flooding in the town. The artesian well did not work and made things worse when underground water burst through and submerged Main Street in four feet of water. The engineers built a gate valve that controlled water flow and supplied the town with water to correct this mistake. Four railroad companies supported the economy of Aberdeen, but in recent years, the city has had a diverse economy that includes different sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, marketing, and service, among others.
