History of Aberdeen

History of Aberdeen

south dakota history

Aberdeen wasn't like it is now back in the late 1800s. There were no roads to bring people here, not even schools, stores, homes, and other essential facilities. Aberdeen was part of a prairie, which was an extensive grassy area. The American population increased, and people in the eastern portion of the country wanted to move to the western part, which was unsettled. And that’s where Aberdeen was located. Many farmers in Wisconsin and Minnesota wanted bigger farms, but none were available where they resided. So they considered relocating west to places like Aberdeen. Railroad companies were the first to establish themselves in the prairie region, laying lines so that their trains could transport people and commodities to the unsettled areas of the country. The founder of Aberdeen, Charles Prior, worked for the Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul railroad in Minneapolis. He was in charge of deciding where new railroad tracks would be laid and establishing new communities along the line, including Aberdeen. Each town built by Charles Prior was named after a place or person he knew. For example, Aberdeen got its name because Mr. Prior's supervisor, Alexander Mitchell, was from Aberdeen in Scotland.
