During the 17th century, plantations occupied the area of what is now known as North Charleston. These plantations remained in the community until the Civil War. Some of these plantations are Archdale Hall Plantation, Elms Plantation, Camp Plantation, French Botanical Garden, Oak Grove Plantation, Marshlands, Windsor Hill Plantation, and Tranquil Hill Plantation. In the late 19th century, as the population started to grow, the huge plantations were divided into smaller ones. For more than two years, the labor force was dominated by African Americans. In fact, in 1870, Charleston County was home to 73 percent Blacks. While in the early 20th century, the area which is now the city of North Charleston had been allocated for the development of military, industry, and other businesses. The first industry that was established here was the E.P. Burton Lumber Company. Later on, other businesses were established including the Charleston Naval Shipyard and the General Asbestos and Rubber Company (GARCO). In 1912, a development company was formed by a group of businessmen. They developed the Park Circle area which designated portions for commercial, industrial, and residential purposes. As industries and military bases expanded during World War II, new residents moved to the area so they can get closer to their work. After undergoing a series of legal battles, North Charleston was declared a city on June 12, 1972. John E. Bourne Jr. became their first mayor.

The beaches in this region are legendary, not just because they are part of history but because of their soft sand, superb surf-ready waves, and several recreational options. A preferred choice of the retirees is Kiawah Island, which is famous for its world-class golfing. Other favorite destinations include Sullivan’s Island and Isle of Palms.
