History

History

history arkansas

Settlers started the city of Salem in 1842 along the Willamette River, formerly inhabited by the Kalapuya Native tribes. A Methodist missionary group from New England settled along the river banks naming it Chemeketa, meaning 'place of rest.' A couple of theories exist about the origin of the name of Salem from an Anglicized version of the Hebrew word 'Shalom,' meaning 'peace,' to the Hebrew word 'Jerusalem,' but the mystery of the name remains unsolved. Salem became the territorial capital in 1851. The capital briefly moved to Corvallis in 1855 but moved back the same year, making it the permanent incorporated capital of the state in 1857. Salem's rich history is the reason it is home to many state government offices and several interesting focal points, including the Mission Mill Museum and the Robert S. Allen Archaeology Museum. Salem has experienced numerous economic influences throughout the years, but a dominant industry has been the harvesting and processing lumber. As the lumber industry slowed down over time, some of the land previously used for lumber was leased to local farmers, providing Salem and the surrounding areas with local foods. Currently, there are numerous projects underway in the downtown core of Salem to supply housing to the area. This project will provide upscale, low- and high-rise condos and other living spaces for professionals and families alike.
