history arkansas

In 1889, some 10,000 people lived in a part of the "Unassigned Lands" that would later become Oklahoma City, known by residents as OKC. Anton Classen, Henry Overholser, John Shartel, and James W. Maney were some of the early leaders of the city's growth. In 1907, when OKC joined the Union, Guthrie was the capital of Oklahoma Territory. Nonetheless, it quickly became the new state's population and commercial center. Soon after, the capital was moved from Guthrie to OKC and the city remained the state's capital to this day. Before World War II, city authorities built a lot of stockyards in the city, which brought jobs and money from Chicago and Omaha, Nebraska. Following the discovery of oil in 1928, the area became a significant source of oil for the country. Finally, after World War II, they built the Interstate Highway System here, thereby making the city a major intersection because of the I-35, I-40, and I-44. The city initiated the Metropolitan Area Projects (MAPS) in 1993, which aims to rebuild the city's core with civic projects to make the downtown more active and vibrant. Due to MAPS, its downtown housing and population increased, as did residential and retail amenities, such as grocery stores, services, and shops.
