History

History

history arkansas

The Lenape Tribes, later referred to as the Delaware Indians, were the original inhabitants of the land that is now known as Jersey City. In 1630, Michael Pauw, the mayor of Amsterdam and director of the Dutch West India Company, purchased the land from Delaware. By 1660, a permanent settlement had been established. For most of the 19th and 20th centuries, Jersey City was an import destination because of its docks, and it soon became a major transportation hub and manufacturing town. As the docks expanded and the railroads were integrated into the transportation mix, Jersey City began sharing transportation communication facilities with New York City. These facilities accommodated the influx of new immigrants coming to live in the United States, who eventually settled in these two cities. Many high-rise buildings on the waterfront were soon built, and the Exchange Place financial district became one of the largest financial centers in the United States. Financial institutions including Chase Bank, Citibank, Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch and UBS can all be found on the Jersey City waterfront.
