In the 1850s, several pioneers lived in the Truckee Meadows, a fertile valley. Most of the pioneers were farmers, and when gold was discovered near Virginia City, most people rushed to the west to find the gold. The town of Reno officially came into being after the construction of the railroad station on May 9, 1868. In 1871, Reno became the county seat of Washoe County. Reno continued to grow as an agricultural and business center, attracting more people due to the transcontinental railroad. In 1926, the Reno Arch was constructed on Virginia Street to promote the expansion of the Transcontinental Highways Exposition of 1927. When the state of Nevada legalized open gambling on March 19, 1931, Reno continued to grow economically. The new gambling laws and liberal divorce laws brought an influx of visitors into Reno, and many local businesses in Reno began to cater to such visitors. The divorce business later died down as other states began to ease their requirement for divorce. In 2018, Reno changed its flag after a local contest was held to design a new city flag.

Reno is located in the northwest section of Nevada, about 22 miles from Lake Tahoe. The city covers a total area of 111.58 square miles, of which 108.74 square miles are land, and 2.83 square miles are covered with water. Reno sits in the rain shadow of the Sierra Nevada Mountain range and experiences an average annual rainfall of 7.35 inches. To access Reno by road, you can use the Victory Highway, Lincoln Highway, Interstate 80, Interstate 395, and Interstate 580. If you want to travel by air, the city is served by Reno-Tahoe International Airport and Reno Stead Airport.

According to the United States Census Bureau, 264,165 people live in Reno, Nevada. The city has a population density of 2,186.4 people per square mile. Reno has a relatively diverse population with 60.3% of the population composed of Whites and 24% being Hispanic or Latino. There are also a few Asians, African Americans, American Indians, and Alaska Natives. Of the 264,165 people, 5.9% are under five years, 20.9% are under 18 years, 15.1% are 65 and above, and 49.6% are female. As per the report, 47.7% of the housing units in the city are owner-occupied, and most of the real estate in Reno is affordable because the city has a median house value of $361,100.
Reno’s economy is supported majorly by gambling and tourism. For many years Reno was the gambling capital until the rise of Las Vegas in the 1960s. Washoe County School District is the top employer in the city, with 8,750 employees. Reno also has several public charter schools, such as Alpine Academy Charter High School, Coral Academy of Science, and High Desert Montessori Schools, among others. You can take your kids to any of the private schools in Reno, such as Legacy Christian School, Excel Christian School, and Nevada Sage Waldorf School, among others. Reno is home to several universities and colleges that provide post-secondary education to students in the city. The University of Nevada, Reno, is the oldest university in Nevada and has more than 21,000 students. The university offers several bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs such as mining engineering, agriculture, journalism, and business. Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) is a two-year institution that serves close to 13,00 students. It offers a wide range of academic and university transfer programs, occupational training, workshops, and other classes. Other institutions of higher learning in Reno include the University of Phoenix, Career College of Northern Nevada, and the Nevada School of Law at Old College.
