History of Reno

History of Reno

 nevada history

Originally, Reno was chosen as the crossing point for travelers who were traveling from the Truckee River towards the California gold rush during the 1840s and 1850s. In 1859, Charles W. Fuller constructed a bridge across the Truckee River. The river crossing became significant as Comstock Lode was discovered near Virginia City. It also plays a significant role in the agriculture and mining industry. Later on, the bridge was sold by Fuller to Myron C. Lake, who renamed it to “Lake’s Crossing.” The Central Pacific Railroad (CPRR) built the First Transcontinental Railroad in 1863. In 1864, Lake’s Crossing became the largest town in Washoe County. It was in 1868 that Reno was officially established, the same time that the railroad station was established. The superintendent of CPRR, Charles Crocker, changed the name of the community to “Reno,” in honor of Major General Jesse Lee Reno, who was killed during the Civil War. The University of Nevada was established in 1874.
