History of Henderson

History of Henderson

 nevada history

Henderson first emerged in the 1940s during World War II after the completion of the Basic Magnesium Plant. The town became the key supplier of magnesium to the United States War Department. The plant used power from the Hoover Dam to separate the metal from its ore using electrolysis. A quarter of all United States wartime magnesium came from the plant in Henderson. After the end of World War II, the production of magnesium was no longer necessary, and the future of Henderson became uncertain. Most of the employees moved away from Henderson, and enrollment in schools in the area reduced by two-thirds. In 1947, the US War Asset Administration (WAA) offered Henderson for sale since the town was deemed a war surplus property. The Nevada legislature visited the town for a weekend to evaluate the possibility of buying Henderson. The legislators approved a bill that gave the Colorado River Commission the authority to purchase the industrial plants in Henderson. Henderson was incorporated on April 16, 1953, as the City of Henderson. Over the years, Henderson has experienced immense economic growth and moved from a manufacturing economy to a more diversified one.
