History of Maryland

History of Maryland

History of Maryland

Maryland’s history stretches back to 1634 when English settlers landed at St. Mary's City and established the colony of Maryland. Maryland has a rich history of events that have shaped its identity as an important state in America's past and present.

It was one of the original thirteen colonies and played a significant role in the American Revolution and signed the Declaration of Independence. After gaining independence from Great Britain, Maryland became a state in 1788.

Maryland has also been involved in several critical civil wars. The Battle of North Point took place on September 12-13, 1814 during the War of 1812 between British and American forces. The British were attempting to retake Baltimore from the Americans. The Battle of North Point was the last battle of the War of 1812 that resulted in a victory for the Americans.

Maryland is also the home of Francis Scott Key who wrote "The Star-Spangled Banner" on September 14, 1814, when he saw the American flag still flying over Fort McHenry after a British bombardment.

The second major civil war that occurred in Maryland was during the Civil War from 1861-1865; this resulted in the Union victory over Confederate States (the south).

The Battle of Antietam took place on September 17, 1862, near Sharpsburg, Maryland, and is considered one of the most significant and bloodiest battles of the American Civil War. The one-day battle resulted in over 22,000 casualties, which was more than any other battle of the war.
