History of Southaven

History of Southaven

mississippi history

Southaven was only officially incorporated in 1980, and began its history as a planned suburb of Memphis, Tennessee. Kemmons Wilson (who founded Holiday inn) built up s few residential neighborhoods just south of the town of Whitehaven, across the border into Mississippi. Over time, Whitehaven was annexed by Memphis, and Southaven came to border the larger city directly. The 80s saw a massive expansion of the Memphis International Airport, which is just 2 miles outside the city. This increased interest in the suburb, causing it to double its physical area and triple its population in just 20 years. The early 21st century saw the city gain a large-scale shopping mall, and continue its expansion. By 2011 it was the 3rd largest city in the state, and the southern anchor of the Memphis Metropolitan Area.
