Sometimes Mississippi gets an unfavorable review. And that’s natural because state politicians can do things like enact laws that set the state behind – such as implementing a ban on critical race theory. However, there are a lot of young changemakers in the state that are staying put and working to move the state forward. Mississippi became the 20th to join the nation in 1817, and Its early dwellers were indigenous communities of the Choctaw and Natchez tribes, among others. Gulfport was incorporated into the state in 1898 and was founded by William Hardy, the president of the Gulf and Ship Island Railroad. He established a railroad station that became known as Gulfport.

The state gets its name from the famous Mississippi River. In fact, Mississippi actually means “great waters.” Gulfport, of course, got its name from the work of Wiliam Hardy, who established the railroad there. Before that in the 1840s, Gulfport was actually known as “Mississippi City,” but that area became the suburb of what is now known as Gulfport.

Mississippi is a fairly diverse state. There are large pockets of Asian, Hispanic, and Black communities across the state. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Mississippi’s 3 million people is about 57% white alone, 38% Black, less than 1% indigenous, about 1% Asian, and 4% Hispanic. So, Mississippi has one of the largest Black populations in the country. The population also tends to lean more middle-aged, with the majority of people sitting between the ages of 18 and 65.

The Coast of Mississippi
Some parts of Mississippi are more diverse than others, and that includes the coastal cities of Biloxi and Gulfport. Of course, the capital city of Jackson is quite diverse because it's a major hub of commerce in the state. Some parts of the Delta are also this way. For instance, there are descendants of Chinese immigrants in the Delta area, who migrated to Mississippi after working in California as farm laborers.

But the coast of Mississippi is very special. Biloxi is 68% white alone, 8% Latino, 20% Black, and 5% Asian. Meanwhile, Gulfport is 54% white alone, 38% Black, 6% Latino, and 1% Asian.
