History of Covington

History of Covington

kentucky history

Covington was initially known as “The Point '' due to its positioning at the Licking and Ohio Rivers. “The point” was later purchased by Richard Gano, John Gano, and Thomas Carneal, a trio of men who referred to themselves as “Covington Company.” After its purchase, it was positioned as the settlement of Covington and incorporated as a town. In honor of Leonard Covington, who died at the War of Crysler's Farm, the city was named after him. Later, the area was officially assimilated by the Kentucky General Assembly and elevated to its city position. Covington prospered as a center for tobacco and cigar making. Stewart Iron Works industries were developed in the city. As a result, the area ranked as the biggest manufacturer of iron fences globally. Other sectors like the stove, glassworks, and distiller factories found their way into the city. Just like in nearby Cincinnati, the industries and businesses in Covington were mainly operated by German and Catholic settlers. At this time, the town was a thriving urban area. As a result, it became the de facto county seat of Kenton. The increasing population led to the city growing beyond its 5 blocks. Main streets and 12th streets were added to host the growing population. The additions led to the formation of German-speaking neighborhoods today known as the Mainstrasse and Mutter Gottes Historic Districts. The city emerged as the second-leading industrial region in Kentucky. Before World War 1, the city-operated with the Chesapeake & Ohio and Louisville &Nashville railways. It served steamboat services to harbors located on the Ohio River. The railways fueled the expansion of industries to include cotton products, machinery equipment, and cordage. Unfortunately, the Great Depression devastated many businesses and residents of Covington. For three years, the population remained stagnant. However, the post-war era saw the revival of Covington cities. New construction projects took place, jobs were created, and the population stabilized. The city’s rebirth as a commercial center saw the booming of today’s most populated city in Kentucky.
