The city was named Overland Park by its founder William B. Strang Jr. He named all the subdivisions he plotted along the Military Roadway, and one of them was Overland City. Initially, Overland Park was part of Mission Urban Township, but it was officially incorporated on May 20, 1960, as a First-Class City. It had a population of about 28,000 and sat on a 13 square mile parcel of land. From the 1960s to the 1980s, the city experienced a residential and commercial development boom. In the 1990s, the city focused on renovating historic buildings, and the process involved opening the Matt Ross Community Center.
