Overland Park is young, incorporated in 1960, with William B. Strang Jr. being its founder in 1905. He arrived in the area and started to plot subdivisions, measuring these out along an old military roadway. This site eventually became the city's main thoroughfare. On May 20, 1960, the city was incorporated as a "city of first-class." At that time, just over 28,000 people were living there. However, its numbers quadrupled by 1990, reaching almost 112,000 people. By 2010, Overland Park's population had grown to over 173,000 people. By then, the town had surpassed Kansas City, becoming the second-most populated city in the state. Overland Park's population boom is attributable to the traditional greenfield suburban development, visible on the city's annexation map. The town attempted an annexation in 2008, but this action gained widespread news as the affected residents did not support the annexation. Since then, the state legislators have amended laws governing annexations, requiring a majority vote of the impacted residents.

The city is in the northeastern part of Kansas, with Interstate 435 and U.S. Route 69 bordering the east of the country seat, Olathe. Overland Park is also located on the northern edge of the Osage Plains, south of the Kansas River. Turkey Creek, one of Kansas Rivers' tributaries, flows through the north part of the city.
