History of Joliet

History of Joliet

Joliet Iron Works Park Illinois

Joliet was initially a camp formed in 1673 by Louis Joliet and a churchman. It was located in present-day Will County upstream of the Des Plaines River. Later on, the site was mined upon by early settlers and named Jolliet, after Louis Joliet. In 1883, under the leadership of Charles Reed, a cabin was set up west of the Des Plaines River. Later on, in 1884, James B Campbell, the commissioner of the canal commissioners, founded a village by planning and paving of plains. He thereafter named the village "Juliet" after one of his daughters. Later that year, the village was elected as the county seat of Will County. It was, therefore, no longer part of Cook County. In the coming year, Juliet locals suggested renaming the county after the original settlers of the camp. Their wish was granted, and it was made a city again. With extensive transport expansion, the city extended to the river. By 1850, further developments like the Rock Island Railroad and Michigan Canal had been made. They thus turned Joliet into an important business center. Due to vast amounts of limestone rock in the area, the city earned its name, "City of Stone." This stimulated the renovation of respective parts of Chicago destroyed by the Chicago fire in 1871. Joliet was also well endowed with quarries that supplied the state capital with thousands of railway cars of stone monthly. The reconstruction of the Joliet Mill earned the city its name "City of Steel," which attracted new pioneers who set up several industries in the area. The city has continued to thrive to date alongside many other industries.
