Inhibited by native settlers before Europeans arrived in 1834, the land in Aurora, Il was occupied by the McCarty brothers — Joseph and Samuel, on both sides of the Fox River. Due to its location, Joseph envisioned the possibility of an ever-growing community in Fox valley. Accordingly, the brothers established a grist mill and sawmill that gave way to its name McCarty Mills. The foundation of the Post Office was laid in 1837, which is when McCarty Mills became Aurora City. The initial divisions of East and West Aurora were set up in 1845 and 1854, respectively. These divisions merged in 1857 to form the City of Lights — Aurora. Its proximity to the Golden West — California, invited settlers from Ireland, Scandinavia, France, Germany, and many other European cities. A small and modest vision of the McCarty brothers grew into a bustling city house with 199,927 residents.

The lush and bountiful cultural history of Aurora, from beer-brewing to clock-making, can be witnessed in Aurora Historical Museum, Tanner House Museum, and Aurora Regional Fire Museum. Tourists enjoy educational and entertaining visits to the museums and can even secure a few souvenirs from the gift shops.
