History of Dover

History of Dover

delaware history

William Penn founded the city of Dover in 1683 as the court town for newly established Kent County. William was the proprietor of the territory commonly known as the "Lower Counties on Delaware." In 1717, Dover was formally laid out by a special commission of the Delaware General Assembly around an existing county courthouse and a jail on the order of William Penn. In 1829, the city of Dover was incorporated as a town and later as a city in 1929.

Delaware was moved from New Castle to the city of Dover in 1777. This movement resulted from its central location and protection from British raiders on the Delaware River. As a result, the beautiful small city isn't just known as the county seat of Kent County, but it is also the site of national events and historic state. Colonial buildings around the Green included the Old State House of 1792, which served as (city's central square) a capitol until 1933, when the state offices were transferred to a nearby Legislative Hall.
