Prior to the arrival of Europeans, the New Haven area was occupied by the Quinnipiac tribe. This group of Native Americans settled near the harbor and survived through fishing and farming. Dutch explorer Adriaen Block made a quick visit to the area in 1614. The Dutch established a trading business of beaver pelts with the settlers but it was only occasional and the Dutch did not reside in the area permanently. A small group of Puritans explored the New Haven harbor area in 1637. In 1638, the main group of five hundred Puritans sailed into the harbor after leaving the Massachusetts Bay Colony. It was their intention to establish a theological community that is more associated with the church. In exchange for protection, the Quinnipiac tribe sold their land to the settlers. In 1640, the theocratic government of the Quinnipiac tribe as well as the nine-square grid plan were established. During this time, the area was renamed Newhaven. Haven refers to a port or harbor. It became home to the New Haven Colony, which is different from the Connecticut Colony. Introspective of its theocratic beliefs, the New Haven Colony did not permit the establishment of other churches, while the Connecticut Colony allowed them.

New Haven is the county seat of New Haven County and is considered the second-largest city in Connecticut. It is located on Long Island Sound and is approximately 75 miles from New York City. New Haven is well known as the educational and manufacturing center of Connecticut. The total area of the city is 20.1 square miles, according to the United States Census Bureau. Of this, 1.4 square miles are made up of water while 18.7 square miles are made up of land. New Haven is made famous for its unique geographic features which are the two reddish trap rock ridges and the huge, shallow harbor. These two trap rock ridges are named the West Rock and East Rock and are used as parks. New Haven has three rivers. These are the Mill, West, and Quinnipiac. Aside from this, the city has several smaller streams such as the Beaver Ponds Outlet, Belden Brook, Wintergreen Brook, Wilmot Brook, and Prospect Creek. However, not all of these small streams provide endless flow throughout the year.

New Haven has a population of 134,023 and is considered the largest city in Connecticut based on population size. So, what is the demographic makeup of this city? Of its 134,023 residents, 43.6 percent are White, 33.6 percent are Black, 5.2 percent are Asian, 30.8 percent are Hispanic, and 5.7 percent have two or more races.
New Haven is also known as the “Elm City” since it is the place where the first tree planting program in the country occurred. It has a median household income of $44,507 and has a median housing price of $205,100.
Originally, the economy of New Haven was primarily based on manufacturing. However, there was a decline of the industry during the postwar period. And cities with huge working class populations such as New Haven was greatly affected. Now more than 50 percent of the city’s economy is dependent on services including health care and education. The largest employer of the city is Yale. Other employers include Assa Abloy lock manufacturing, Southern Connecticut State University, the Knights of Columbus headquarters, Alexion Pharmaceuticals, Covidien and United Illuminating.
Aside from manufacturing and services, other industries in New Haven include construction and mining, agriculture, trade, transportation and utilities, as well as finance and real estate.

New Haven is home to Hopkins School, which is the fifth-oldest educational institution in the country. The city has several private schools and public magnet schools such as High School in the Community, Metropolitan Business Academy, Hill Regional Career High School, New Haven Academy, Co-op High School, and Edgewood Magnet School.
