colorado history

Colorado Springs was part of the American frontier before it developed into what it is today. The city was founded in 1859 during the Pike's Peak Gold Rush. General William Jackson Palmer founded the town of Colorado Springs when he turned it into a resort stopover. The presence of railroads contributed to the city's steady development as they brought visitors and tourists to the city from other parts of the country. Colorado Springs was known as a town with seven railroad junctions, with the busiest one being the Denver and Rio Grande railroad junction. The nearby neighborhoods of Spencer Penrose, Winfield Scott Stratton, and Palmer provided land and necessary funding for buildings, parks, and various organizations. Colorado Springs was also home to famous and successful artists, mine owners, and authors. The mountain setting and climate made Colorado Springs a popular health and tourist resort. In the early 1900s, most of the large homes in the city became boarding houses or were made into apartment houses. The same also happened in the 1930s during the Great Depression, when there was a significant shortage of houses.
