It is bordered by the Rocky Mountains to the west, high desert lands to the south, high plains to the east, and the Palmer Divide to the north. At the 2010 U.S Census, Colorado Springs had a diverse racial makeup. 78.6% of the city's population was White, 6.3% African American or Black, 16.2% Latino or Hispanic of any race, 1.3% Native American, and 3.1% Asian. 5.5% of the population was from other races, including Pacific Islanders. 14.7% of the population were Mexican Americans, making it a highly diversified racial profile.
Colorado Springs is one of the most established in terms of industry and technology in the state of Colorado. Its economy is primarily driven by the military, tourism, and high-tech industry. The service sector is also experiencing significant growth thanks to the increasing population. As of October 2015, the city's unemployment rate was 3.9%, which is a drop from the 5.2% recorded the previous year.
