Historic LA

Riverside County is a county in the U.S. state of California and is located in the Inland Empire metropolitan area.

The California State Legislature created the county on May 9th, 1893, from parts of San Bernardino County and Los Angeles County. Agriculture dominated the county's early years, but commerce, construction, industry, transportation, and tourism quickly followed. Each industry played an essential role in the region's fast development.

The population of the United States has exploded in recent years. Riverside expanded by approximately 76 percent in population between 1980 and 1990, making it California's fastest-growing county. Riverside County was named after the Santa Ana River, which flows through the county. One of the most famous landmarks in Riverside County is Lake Mathews.

Although the county was founded in 1893, the country had been held by various Native American tribes long before Europeans, and their ancestors arrived, including the Serranos, Luisenos, Cupenos, Chemehuevi, and Cahuillas. Juan Bautista de Anza, who headed an overland journey in 1774, was one of the first Caucasian travelers in the area.
