History of Los Angeles

History of California

The Los Angeles area was first inhabited by the Tongva and Chumash tribes. In 1542, Explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo seized the area for the Spanish Empire while on an official exploring expedition along the pacific coast. Franciscan friar Junipero Serra sanctioned the building of the first mission in the area, Mission San Gabriel Arcangel. In 1781, forty-four settlers known as "Los Pobladores'' founded the pueblo (town) called "El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de Los Ángeles," meaning "The Town of Our Lady the Queen of the Angels." Mexico claimed the current Los Angeles territory when it gained independence from Spain in 1821. Governor Pio Pico made Los Angeles Alta California's regional capital. America took control of California after a series of battles that resulted in the Treaty of Cahuenga, signed on January 13, 1847. The discovery of petroleum in the city in 1892 and the arrival of railroads in 1876 helped strengthen the city's economy. By 1900, the city's population had soared to 102,000.
