Laramie was named after a French-Canadian trapper who was among the earliest visitors to the area. The town was established in the mid-1860s as a tent city near the Union Pacific portion of the first transcontinental railroad, the Overland Stage Line route and just north of the Fort Sanders Army post. The rails passed through the city in 1868 on May 4, but the first passenger service started on May 10 same year. During this time, entrepreneurs were constructing more permanent structures. Soon, the city had plenty of schools, houses, stores and churches. The city boasted of the best social amenities in the state that attracts residents from all demographic groups. Early businesses comprised a brickyard, a railroad-tie treatment plant, and rolling mills. Besides, the city had a plaster mill, a glass manufacturing plant, a brewery, and a slaughterhouse. The diversity in the city’s industrial sector has been facilitated by the rapid evolution of transport and other infrastructures. The agricultural and business sectors have also expanded since the city’s founding. Its rapid economic growth is attributed to a surge in sheep and cattle businesses which necessitated the development of stockyards. This created the need to develop an ice plant for refrigeration of animal products to facilitate trade. As such, stock raisers depended on the city businesses for their needs which promoted the growth of its economy. Even today, agriculture has continued to play a central role in the city economy.
