History

The Ho-Chunk (Winnebago), Menominees, Fox, and the Ojibwa Indians were the original inhabitants of Green Bay. The Winnebago lived near the sea, where they hunted, fished, and grew wild rice, tobacco, beans, and squash. Having heard about the fertile soils and plenty of natural resources in the Green Bay area, New France founder Samuel de Champlain commissioned Jean Nicolet to befriend the Native Americans and search for a shorter trade route to China. In the winter of 1634, Nicolet set on a journey to what is today known as Green Bay. Initially, the place was known as La Baie des Puants, which means the stinking bay in French. Here, Nicolet founded a small trading center called La Baie Verte, meaning the green bay. His settlement was among the first permanent European settlements in the U.S. For about one year, Nicolet lived among the Winnebago tribe, making allies with them and helping them open up trading and commerce opportunities. When Nicolet returned to Quebec, Champlain was dead, stalling other planned visits to La Baie Verte. After avoiding the area for some decades due to the intensity of the European conflicts in the east, Louis Jolliet and Jacques Marquette, French explorers, traveled through the Green Bay on their way to the Mississippi River in 1673. By 1717, the French built a fort that would become a fur trading community until the British took over the region in 1763. The British called the area the Green Bay, and the name La Baie de Verte faded gradually. They controlled the area until 1783, when the Americans took control of Green Bay. In 1816, Americans constructed Fort Howard, which saw Green Bay grow rapidly. By the 1870s, the city had several railroads, which opened the area to more growth. What used to be a fur-trading center was now a city with lumber milling, paper making, and iron smelting industries. To date, paper making is still a major economic contributor in Green Bay, WI.
