History of Rapid City

History of Rapid City

south dakota history

Like other towns in the Midwest, Aberdeen was formed next to developing railroads in the region. It was conventionally plotted as a town by Charles Prior in January 1881. Later that year, Minneapolis office superintendent Alexander Mitchell, responsible for town names, named the city Aberdeen after his birthplace. However, the city was officially founded on July 6, 1881, after the first arrival of a Milwaukee railroad train. After that, it was functional under a city charter granted by the Territorial Legislature in March 1883. The city tremendously grew alongside the construction of several businesses and buildings on its main street. Being home to four diverse railroad companies with depots, an aerial view of the convergence of the four railroad tracks resembled the spokes of a wheel at a hub. This earned the city its name, “The Hub of the Dakotas.” The four railroads were a significant boost to the Aberdeen economy. It has, therefore, continually flourished alongside other industries in the present day. However, the BNSF Railway is the only operational railway in the city today.
