History of Charleston

History of Charleston

Before colonization, the region of Charleston was the territory of the Cusabo people. The initial British settlers of Charles Town began by declaring war on the Cusabo in 1671. They allied with the Westo, who were already hostile to the Cusabo, but by 1679 the settlers switched sides, allying with the Cusabo against the Westo. Before long the first settlement of Charles Town failed and was abandoned. Another village nearby took up the name in 1780 and managed to thrive, based on a more defensible terrain and a better harbor. The early years of Charles Town were marked by war, an earthquake, and multiple outbreaks of yellow fever and malaria. Nevertheless, the town was fortified in 1704 in order to withstand the French and Spanish forces contesting ownership of the region, as well as pirates and hostile native peoples. Its early economy was based on plantation agriculture, shipbuilding and the slave trade. Charleston was heavily contested in the Revolutionary War, as well as in the Civil war. It experienced an economic revival in the 1980s and 90s,.

Location

Charleston can be found on the coast of South Carolina, just south of the center of its ocean-facing border. Old Charleston was effectively built on a peninsula, along an inlet where the Wando, Cooper and Ashley rivers flow into the sea. The six districts of modern Charleston sprawl along both sides of this complex river delta. Much of the best Charleston land is located very close to one waterway or another. Before you begin looking at mobile homes in Charleston, though, consider what kind of neighborhood you want to live in, and who you would want your neighbors to be. A few of the most exciting neighborhoods in the city include: Charleston Neighborhoods West Ashley This neighborhood is very close to Downtown and is known for its nightlife. It is also Charleston’s single largest neighborhood, so it is not surprising it is so diverse. West Ashley is just west of the Charleston peninsula, along the Ashley River. It is primarily residential with nearly every type of home represented. It is a great place for buying a mobile home in Charleston, SC, but you could also find the odd 8,000 square foot mansion. Median home prices are just around the $300,000 mark in West Ashley. Folly Beach Folly Beach is a great place to scout out mobile homes in Charleston. It is really a surf town at heart, known for its waves, its pier, its beaches and the laid-back attitude of its people. Folly Beach is a huge tourist draw in the summer, and a sleepy little beach neighborhood for the rest of the year. The permanent population is made up of college students, retirees and young families for the most part. Housing is not cheap, though, with median prices upwards of $560,000. James Island If you are looking for mobile homes in Charleston, SC that are near both downtown and the beach, try James Island. It is opposite Downtown on the other side of the harbor. It is a key spot for the city’s casual dining scene, specializing mostly in barbecue and seafood. The 600+ acre James Island County Park is a great place to go boating and hiking as well. Harleston Village Another good spot to find high quality Charleston mobile homes is Harleston Village. It is a mix of quiet residential streets, bars and restaurants and some of the city’s most stately historic homes. Harleston Village is popular with professionals, students and established families. Some of the city’s best shopping is to be found there as well, along King Street. Sullivan’s Island If you want to buy a mobile home in Charleston but don’t want to feel like you’re ‘in the city’, then try Sullivan’s Island. It is a solid 20 minute form the center of town, so you’ll get that sense of distance, but it is close enough to take advantage of the city’s amenities as well. It also offers plenty of great beachfront real estate and some of the best schools in the city.
