History of Providence

rhode island history

It was in 1636 when Providence was founded by preacher Roger Williams, who had to leave from Massachusetts due to religious persecution. Williams bought land from the Narragansett Indians. A new settlement was introduced and at the same time, they implemented a policy of political and religious freedom. This new residence was named Providence by Williams to honor God for always protecting him. Providence quickly became a prominent New World seaport since the area can be easily accessed by water. The people in Providence were the ones who supplied commodities to the Continental and French armies during the Revolutionary War. By 1781, Providence businesses were already sending expeditions to the Middle East, Mediterranean, and the Far East. As trade continues to thrive, Providence continues to grow and flourish.
