History of Bismarck

History of Bismarck

north dakota history

The Mandan Native American tribe were the first people to occupy the area that is now present-day Bismarck before Europeans moved into the area. In 1872, European Americans began to settle in the area and named it Missouri Crossing. The name Missouri Crossing came from the Lewis and Clark Expedition when they crossed the river as they explored the area. Edwinton was the first town to be founded in the area in 1872 after the North Pacific Railway reached the Missouri River. The town's name was changed to Bismarck to honor Otto von Bismarck, the then German chancellor. Bismarck began to expand and became the territorial capital of Dakota Territory in 1883. Bismarck's economy relied on agriculture, but it was directly affected by the Panic of 1893, which led to economic hardships in the city. A fire broke out in 1898, causing significant destruction in the city and compounding more economic distress to the city. The inhabitants began to rebuild the city, which led to the construction of some of the city's best hotels, such as Hotel McKenzie and Grand Pacific Hotel. Unfortunately, another fire destroyed the state capitol building in 1930 but it was rebuilt by 1934.
