People have inhabited this land for thousands of years. In 1540, when Eurpoeans first arrived, pueblos had already been established throughout the land. Artifacts and petroglyphs help to tell the story of the earliest people on the land and can still be learned from today. The area was founded by explorers in 1706, named after Duke of Albuquerque, a viceroy of New Spain. It quickly became a known trading center on the Chihuahua trail which originated in Mexico and was a major route of trade and travel. Population grew quickly around 1918 when Albuquerque became known for its hospitals, attracting many people seeking health. Following World War 2, it was referred to as “Little Washington'' due to the Sandia Complex and Air Force Base. And during the Cold War, the area served as a major center of military research.
