History

History

history arkansas

Bellevue began as a trading post for the Missouri Fur Company in 1822 by Joshua Pilcher. Later, the post was transferred to Lucien Fontanelle, who renamed it Fontanelle’s post and became a trading post for the American Fur Company. Fontanelle later sold the post to the U.S government in 1832. Bellevue continued to grow economically because of its proximity to the Missouri River and access to the Platte River Valley. Many people believed that Bellevue should be the capital of the Nebraska Territory, but T.B Cumming selected Omaha as the territorial capital. Omaha continued to grow while Bellevue’s growth remained still for a few years, and the population began to drop in the late 1890s. Growth was slightly improved by the construction of Fort Crook. During the 1900s, the population in Bellevue also grew slightly due to the improved transportation access to Omaha. Fort Crook was later redesigned and renamed Offutt Air Force Base, which spurred Bellevue’s population growth. The Offutt Air Force Base attracted thousands of workers, and, by 1950, the population in Bellevue grew from less than 1200 to 4000. The Martin Bomber Plant is located in the Offutt Air Force Base, and it was used to assemble the planes that dropped the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
