History

History

history arkansas

Omaha was founded in 1857. In 1804, the area was visited by William Clark and Meriwether Lewis on their exploratory journey to the Pacific coast and the place where the pioneer fur trader Manuel Lisa established a trading post during the War of 1812. Omaha was incorporated in 1857 and was popularly known as the "Gateway to the west." The name "Omaha" was derived from the Omaha Indian word, which means "Upstream people." The city experienced a major setback in the Panic of 1857. Then went on to lose the Nebraska State Capitol to Lincoln in 1867. Great business leaders came together to build the Jobbers Canyon in downtown Omaha to suit farmers in Nebraska, South Dakota, Wyoming, and further west. The city then emerged as the largest city in Nebraska. Ever stopped to wonder why the city is considered the Heartland? The city has a strong heritage of farming. Despite the challenges faced by the farmers, such as brutal winter, floods, a large amount of snowfall, or financial help, the farmers remain strong, endure and stay resilient through it all. From the 1890s to the mid-20th century, the city of Omaha was unarguably one of the top livestock markets globally and a leading city in the meat-processing industry.
