History of Virginia

History of Virginia

History of Virginia

Virginia was ground zero for the English colonization of America, making it perhaps the most storied state of all in the US. It was named after Queen Elizabeth I, the Virgin Queen. The English established their first permanent settlement in North America in the Virginian area of Jamestown in 1607. Initially, they struggled to maintain a food supply, even as they explored the lands for gold, spices, and other resources. A famine during a particularly harsh winter that followed two years later didn’t improve things. The English resorted to eating leather from their boots, and in some extreme cases, there were incidents of cannibalism.

By the mid-1600s, things had gotten a lot better for the colonialists. Tobacco proved to be a lucrative export, and it was grown on large plantations through intensive slave labor. Most of these enslaved people came from West Africa. Tobacco plantation owners enjoyed incredible wealth and luxury thanks to the high demand for tobacco. Still, most white settlers had to do subsistence farming to care for themselves and their families.

The 17th century marked a conflict between the colonists and the Native Indian tribes who had called Virginia home before their arrival. Throughout the 1750s and 60s, these tribes allied themselves with the French, who were rivals of the British empire. This period was known as the French and Indian War. Even so, the colony of Virginia quickly became the richest and most densely populated of the thirteen English colonies in North America with an elected General Assembly. The wealthy planters played a crucial role in America breaking away from the influence of Great Britain in 1776. It was they who helped write the Declaration of Independence and Constitutional Convention. They also helped establish the Bill of Rights. It’s worth noting that 4 out of the first 5 Presidents of the United States came from Virginia. It shows just how influential this state was in shaping the course of American history.

Virginia became the biggest state by the population during the American Civil War to join the Confederates. Unionists in Virginia retaliated by creating a separate state called West Virginia. During this period, Virginia’s economy took a nosedive, and it wasn’t until many years after the war ended that the state got back on its feet again. The tobacco industry experienced a revival, as did coal mining and other industrial activities.
