Indianapolis, or Indy as popularly known, is one of the biggest cities in the United States not located on any movable body of water and was once home to the Lenape tribe, also known as the Delaware Nation. The city was planted near the geographical center of the state of Indiana shortly after it became a state in 1816. A commission proposed that the best location would be in the state's center near John McCormick's cabin on the White River. Indianapolis came to be in 1821, and it is bounded today by North, East, South, and West streets. The government seat was moved to Indianapolis in 1824, and the legislature convened there in 1825 when it officially became the state capital, although the first capitol building was not developed until 1835. In 1832, the city was incorporated with a population of over 1000 and further multiplied with the introduction of the rail center by the start of the American civil war in 1861. After the Civil War in the 1880s, metal packing and metalworking were introduced as major industries while the latter led to the development of automobile manufacturing which became the city economy's driving force and helped the population of Indianapolis exceed 100,000 by 1890.

The state of Indiana became the home of Basketball after James Naismith visited an Indiana basketball state final game with over 15,000 cheering fans and later noted, "Basketball really had its origin in Indiana, which continues to be the center of its sports. It is worth noting that James Naismith developed the sports in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1891. This has also made basketball the most popular sport in Indianapolis, with the Pacers at the top with three championships (1970, 1972, 1973), and their home venue is the Bainbridge Fieldhouse.

The city also has a successful NFL Football team in Indianapolis Colts, with its home venue at the Lucas Oil Stadium opened in August 2008. They have won three NFL championships and two Super Bowls. Another famous sports event being held in Indianapolis is the Motor Speedway which has been in existence for more than a century at the Oval, with spectacle racing like The Indianapolis 500 and Grand Prix of Indianapolis, and Brickyard 400.

And oh! Indianapolis knows a thing or two about hosting major events. The city hosted the 2021 NBA All-Star game, Super Bowl XLVI, the Women's NCAA Final Four in 2011 and 2016, and the Men's NCAA Final Four in 2010 and 2015. The Indianapolis food scene is getting the recognition it deserves year after year. St Elmo, the century-old stick house, has been around since 1902 and has become an institution where the single appetizer on the menu–shrimp cocktail–is the focal point of the annual St. Elmo Shrimp Cocktail Eating Championship.

Restaurants in the city offer mouthwatering discounts during a two-week food festival called Devour Downtown. This is the best time to go on a food tour at some of the city's high-end restaurants. Prefer a homemade meal? Head to the city's farmers market to purchase fresh produce such as pickles, jams, baked goods, and other forms of edibles.

Some of Indianapolis's iconic food and locations are the Pork Tenderloin Sandwich at Edwards Drive-In or The Aristocrat, the beef burger at Workingman's Friend on North Belmont, the Reuben at Shapiro's Delicatessen, and or the Dutch Baby at Milktooth on Virginia Avenue.

Look no further because the city of Indianapolis is home to 212 parks and recreation centers, such as Friedman Park, Eagle Creek Park, and Riverside Park. Eagle Creek Park is the biggest in Indianapolis and one of the largest municipal parks in the United States, with approximately 1,400 acres of water and 3,900 acres of land.

The city is home to three Fortune 500 companies: pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly and Company, health insurance company Anthem, and agricultural chemical company Corteva. The exportation sector has also had a great impact on the economy, and those export products are mainly motor vehicle parts, engine and power equipment, medical equipment and supplies, pharmaceuticals, and aircraft products and parts. Other notable companies in the city include Amazon, with a major presence employing 9000 staff, FedEx Express employing 7000 workers, and Ingram Micro with 1300 workers.

Arts in Indianapolis

Widely known as the home of the world's biggest children's museum, the Children Museum of Indianapolis is located at North Meridian Street. This museum presents kids with experiences like seeing a full-size dinosaur skeleton, working in an archeological lab, and stepping inside an international space station. If you are an art lover, you should set a reminder for the annual nationally-ranked Broad Ripple Art Fair, which displays works from over 200 artists and artisans.

The Indianapolis Museum of Art is another popular location for locals. The museum offers free admission year-round, renowned art exhibits, and summer nights outdoor movie screenings. Its gardens are also great places to take a walk or go on picnics. Other notable museums include the Indiana War Memorial, The Eiteljorg Museum, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum, and the Indianapolis Museum of Art.

Entertainment has been a part of the history of Indianapolis, with festivals and music concerts being held all year round. Other famous venues in the city include Radio Radio, Duke's Indy, 8 Seconds Saloon, Melody Inn, Howl At The Moon, The Vogue, and The HI-FI, a performance and art space situated in the Murphy Art Center in Fountain Square. The venue has played host to Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, The Lumineers, and Walk The Moon.

Indianapolis is home to over 40 institutions of higher learning, with 31.1% of the inhabitants holding a bachelor's degree while 10.5% have a graduate degree.
