History

washington dc history

A unique American city was founded on July 16, 1790, and named for George Washington, a founder and the first president of the United States. Benjamin Oden, Daniel Carroll of Duddington, Samuel Davidson, David Burnes, and Notley Young were the five men who owned the land that became Washington, D.C. They gave their property to the government for the capital city, compensated, and became identified as Washington's "Original Proprietors." The United States Constitution set up Washington DC to serve its purpose as the nation's capital. In the 17th century, the Algonquian-speaking Piscataway tribe known as the Nacotchtank were the first people to inhabit the lands around the Potomac River. On July 9, 1790, a compromise between Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison, known as the Residence Act, approved creating the national capital. It was located on the Potomac River and then passed by Congress. Seven days later, then-President George Washington selected the location of the capital city and signed the bill into law. The city was formerly the District of Columbia. It is also nicknamed D.C. or Washington and has its motto as Justitia omnibus, which means "Justice for All."
