History of Little Rock

History of Little Rock

history arkansas

The name “Little Rock” came from the French phrase “la petite roche” which was used to describe the area by an early French explorer in the 1700s. It was not until 1812 that the first settler made camp in the area while working as a fur trapper. Prior to settlement, the area was solely inhabited by the Quapaw tribe who took advantage of the rich Arkansas soil and the ample hunting opportunities. Little Rock was deemed the capital of the territory in the 1820s and remained so when Arkansas became the 25th state in 1836. The area played a role in the American Civil War and to this day you can find historical markers to learn more about the battles here. Little Rock is perhaps most known for the 1957 Little Rock Nine uprising surrounding the desegregation of schools at Central High School. Additionally, attention was drawn to the area when Bill Clinton, a native of southwest Arkansas, served as US president.
