History of Mesa

History of Mesa

Stage coach arizona history

Mesa’s history goes back to the days of the Hohokam tribe, which were the first known people to settle here. The Hohokam built a series of canals that formed a sophisticated irrigation system that allowed them to not only survive but thrive in the desert for almost 2,000 years. The city itself was founded in 1878 when Mormon pioneers set out from Utah to build “stations on the road” that would aid the church’s expansion into Mexico. They used the Hohokam’s old irrigation canals to establish farming in the Salt River Valley and began to grow crops. They set up houses and businesses in an area known as Lehi, that’s now located in the north of Mesa.

Location

“Mesa” is an apt name for this city, as it sits on top of a plateau. This city is located in the Sonoran Desert, one of the most beautiful deserts in the world. This desert receives up to 15 inches of rain each year, something that makes it possible for many different types of cacti and other plants to grow here. Saguaro, barrel, and prickly pear, all thrive here and during the springtime, the desert comes to life with beautiful, brightly colored wildflowers. The Sonoran Desert is also home to many different types of animals, including birds. Birds ranging from the Golden Eagle to the hummingbird can all be found here. The Superstition Mountains, a craggy, volcanic mountain range can be found just to the east of Mesa. Rising nearly 6,000 feet above the desert, these mountains are among the most photographed sites in Arizona, second only to the Grand Canyon.
