History of Harris County Texas

In 1822, the first European residents in Harris County were reported. Their vessel entered Galveston Bay and sank on the Red Fish Bar. Some passengers continued up the bay system, but it's unclear whether they stayed in Buffalo Bayou or on the San Jacinto River. Mr. Ryder, one of the passengers, settled in what is now known as Morgan's Point, Texas. In 1822, John Iiams arrived in Cedar Point after sailing from Berwick's Bay, Louisiana. Dr. Johnson Hunter followed Iiams.

In addition, he sank his boat near Galveston. He made his home at Morgan's Point and was a land grantee there. Nathaniel Lynch made his home in the area and ran a ferry service. Stephen F. Austin, the land impresario, gathered at the home of William Scott in 1824 to transfer titles for Mexican headlights. Austin's secretary, Samuel May Williams, and the land commissioner, Baron von Bastrop, accompanied him. In what would subsequently be known as Harris County, about thirty families obtained legal claims to land. Moses Callahan, Ezekial Thomas, and the Vince brothers were the early immigrants who landed on Buffalo Bayou.

Harris County Namesake

Harris County's name can be traced back to John Richardson Harris (1790–1829), who arrived in 1824. Relocating with his family, Harris moved to Sainte Genevieve, Missouri Territory, where he remained until the early 1820s.

At Buffalo Bayou, Harris was given a league of land (about 4,428 acres). In 1826, he drafted the entire town of Harrisburg and constructed a trading station and a grist mill there. Until his death in 1829, he ran boats transporting cargo between New Orleans and Harrisburg.

On December 22, 1836, the First Congress of the Republic of Texas founded Harrisburg County. Galveston Island was included in the original county limits, but they were revised to their current shape in May 1838.
