idaho history

The rich history of Meridian, Idaho, first takes form when the town settlement was established in 1891 at the northern side of the present site, on the Onweiler farm. It was originally called Hunter. Then, in 1893, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows represented their lodge by the name "Meridian,” as it was located on Boise Meridian. It served as the cue for changing the town's name to what we call it today. The semi-arid climate and the area's geography hampered agricultural activity until 1892. Later, the Settlers' Irrigation Ditch was introduced with much-needed changes in the approach, resources, and technology to replenish fertile agricultural land in Meridian, Idaho. The earliest settlers occupied the regions around Five Mile Creek for its water availability. With the advancement of opportunities, the town quickly became a city, establishing itself as a dairy center for Idaho. Residents of the area planted fruit orchards, establishing a powerful growing, packing, and shipping industry.
