Moving around by car is very easy in this area. It is very convenient to park, and most real estate listings are a short drive from the closest highway, such as Jacob Dekema Freeway. In contrast, getting around by public transit is difficult in this part of San Diego. Thankfully, homeowners have access to a few bus lines, and bus stops are typically close by. Traveling by foot in Serra Mesa is not very common, even though many daily needs can be carried out by walking.
Primary schools are easy to walk to from anywhere in Serra Mesa. In contrast, it can be challenging to access high schools as a pedestrian. Residents can choose between public and private elementary schools. With respect to food, the nearest supermarket in Serra Mesa is usually only a rather short walk away. Furthermore, those who like to eat in restaurants will have a fair number of opportunities, for example along Sandrock Road, and a small selection of coffee shops is available as well.
There are a lot of green spaces to enjoy in Serra Mesa. It is easy to reach parks from most locations in the neighborhood and there are a few of them nearby for residents to relax in. Lastly, this area is relatively quiet, as there are few people out and about on the streets; however noise levels are higher closer to Cabrillo Freeway or Escondido Freeway.
In Serra Mesa, roughly 45% of buildings are single detached homes, but large apartment buildings and small apartment buildings are also present in the housing stock. This part of the city has a good variety of housing sizes, ranging from lofts to four or more bedrooms. There are equal parts renters and owners living in this area. Roughly 30% of homes in this neighborhood were built prior to the 1960s, while most of the remaining buildings were constructed in the 1960s and the 1990s.
